This is the strangest requirement on the internet and it is surprisingly common: a form that rejects your image for being too small. Not too large — too small. Usually the rule is a range, something like "between 20KB and 50KB", and a well-optimised photograph falls straight through the bottom of it.

Why a form would demand a minimum

It is a crude proxy for quality. The people who wrote the validator wanted to stop applicants uploading a blurry 3KB thumbnail of a passport photo, and rather than checking dimensions or actual sharpness — which is harder — they checked file size. It is a bad rule that catches good files, and it is enforced by systems nobody has the authority to change.

How this adds size honestly

Two steps, in order. First the image is re-encoded at maximum quality, which adds real detail back into the file and costs nothing in fidelity. For most images that alone clears a modest minimum. If it does not, the dimensions are enlarged in steps until the file is big enough.

What this tool deliberately does not do is append junk bytes to the end of the file. That is the easy approach and most tools of this kind use it, because trailing data after the end-of-image marker is ignored by decoders. But it produces a file whose size does not match its content — which stricter validators detect and reject, and which is really just lying about the file. If a form is asking for a minimum as a proxy for quality, padding it with zeroes defeats the check rather than satisfying it.

What to expect

  • The image will look the same or very slightly better, since quality goes up rather than down.
  • If enlarging was needed, the pixel dimensions will have grown. The result tells you the new size.
  • Enlarging cannot add real detail, so an upscaled image is softer per pixel even though the file is bigger.
  • Very simple images — flat colour, plain graphics — compress so efficiently that there is a practical ceiling on how much genuine data can be added.

Check the maximum too

Requirements of this kind almost always come as a range, so make sure you have not sailed past the upper limit while clearing the lower one. Set your target comfortably inside the range rather than just above the floor — a file at 21KB against a 20KB minimum leaves no margin if the form measures slightly differently from your operating system.

Why would a form require a minimum file size?

It is a crude proxy for image quality — an attempt to stop people uploading tiny blurry scans. Checking file size is easier than checking sharpness, so that is what many validators do, and it catches perfectly good optimised images.

Does this just pad the file with junk?

No, deliberately. Padding produces a file whose size does not match its content, which stricter validators reject. This raises quality to maximum first and enlarges the dimensions only if that is not enough, so every added byte is real image data.

Will the image look worse?

It will look the same or marginally better, since the quality setting goes up rather than down. If enlarging was required the image is softer per pixel, because upscaling cannot invent detail — but the visible picture is unchanged.

My file is still too small. What now?

Very simple images compress so efficiently that there is a limit to how much genuine data can be added. Adding visual detail — using a less flat source image, or a photograph rather than a graphic — is the only real fix.

I have overshot the maximum size now. How do I fix that?

Use one of the compression tools to bring it back to an exact figure. Aim for the middle of the permitted range rather than the edge, so small measurement differences do not push you outside it again.

Are the pixel dimensions changed?

Only if raising the quality was not enough on its own. When enlarging is needed, the result tells you the dimensions it settled on so you can check them against any other requirement the form has.
