Of all the size targets here, this is the one where you give up least. 500KB is enough for a large, detailed photograph to keep essentially all of its visible quality, which makes it the right choice when something has a limit but you would rather not compromise to meet it.
Who asks for half a megabyte
- Email attachment etiquette, particularly when sending several photographs at once.
- Content management systems and forums with a per-upload cap.
- Property, marketplace and auction listings, which often permit 500KB or 1MB per photo.
- Insurance and warranty claims, where evidence photographs need to remain legible.
- Anyone deliberately keeping a media library from growing without limit.
Expect quality to stay high
A 12-megapixel phone photo typically arrives somewhere between 3 and 6MB. Compressing it to 500KB sounds drastic, but most of that original size is spent on detail beyond what any screen shows — much of it sensor noise. In practice the search usually settles around quality 80 to 90 at full dimensions, which is a range where you would need to compare crops side by side at 100% zoom to see any difference at all.
Dimension reduction is rare at this budget. It happens only with very large sources — a 45-megapixel camera file, or a panorama — where there are simply more pixels than 500KB can describe well.
When to choose a smaller target instead
If the images are going on a website, 500KB is more than a web page should be spending on one photograph. 200KB is the more sensible budget there, and modern formats will do better still. Use 500KB when the constraint is a hard limit from somewhere else and your priority is keeping the image looking right, not when you are optimising a page.
Email is where this limit earns its keep
Mail servers commonly reject messages over 20 or 25MB, and that ceiling counts every attachment together plus roughly a third added by the encoding used to send them. Ten untouched phone photographs will breach it. The same ten at 500KB each come to about 5MB, which passes comfortably and still looks right when the recipient opens them full screen. It is one of the few places where a generous size limit is genuinely the correct engineering answer rather than a compromise.
Do not compress twice
One thing worth knowing whatever the target: every JPEG save re-compresses the image and adds a little more damage, and that damage accumulates. Compressing an already-compressed file to 500KB may produce a worse result than compressing the original would have, because the encoder faithfully preserves the artifacts already there. Always start from the best copy you have.
